What Is A Scan Disgnostic Tool?

Your car's transmission is one of its most important parts. The transmission is responsible for ensuring that the right amount of power is transferred from the engine to your wheels so that you can drive at your desired speed. Because of this, it's essential that you keep your transmission in good shape through regular maintenance. Once a transmission begins having problems, it can result in a poor fuel economy, or worse, can make your car difficult to drive or render it unable to function at all.

Here at Express Transmissions, we are able to do a thorough inspection of your transmission to make sure it's in good working condition by using our diagnostic scan tool.

Our Diagnostic Scan Tool

Transmissions are extremely complex components, which should be no surprise considering the task that they are designed to do. Today's transmissions are built out of a combination of mechanics, hydraulics, and electronics, all of which are managed and monitored by an onboard computer. This onboard computer sends and receives information about the performance and operation of the transmission.

This means that to perform an effective inspection of a transmission, a diagnostic scan tool must be used - and only mechanics with technological training and know-how can properly use a diagnostic scan tool and analyze the data that it provides. If there's something wrong with the transmission, an error fault code will be logged into the onboard computer. Our diagnostic scan tool will receive that error code.

However, the error code doesn't automatically identify the problem with the transmission. The technician will need to use their experience and expertise in order to assess the transmission and figure out exactly what the problem is.

Signs You Need to Have Your Transmission Inspected

If you're having the following issues with your car, it means that you should come in to have your transmission checked.

  • Shifting feels rough – If the gear shifts aren't as smooth as usual or you can hear a clunk or thud-like sound when your car shifts, there's an issue.
  • The transmission is slipping – If it feels like the gear changes for no reason while you're driving, it means its slipping. It can result in a whining-like sound from the engine as well.
  • There's a delay in engagement – If there's a delay before your car engages into drive, it's most likely your transmission's fault.
  • Your transmission warning light is on – The warning light will usually come on if an error code has been lodged into the onboard computer. The warning light will often come on if you're having any of the previously listed issues - but this isn't always the case. In some cases, a diagnostic scan is the only way to identify what the issue is that it is causing the warning light to come on.

These are all common transmission issues, although there can be numerous problems at the source of these issues, which is why a diagnostic scan will need to be run. Even if you're not having problems, you should have your transmission checked regularly to make sure that it's in good condition. Bring it into our shop today and we'll use our diagnostic scan tool to identify any problems that your transmission might be having.
